Varsity Letters is back this week with one of B.C.’s most enduring basketball coaches and personalities: Larry Street.
The former Burnaby South grad, who played collegiately at Simon Fraser and has, for the past generation, coached the senior boys varsity at Courtenay’s G.P. Vanier Secondary, Street joins host Howard Tsumura to chat about his lifelong love affair with the sport.
Varsity Letters, Canada’s only podcast dedicated solely to provincial university and high school sports coverage, is produced by Gabriel Lynn, and available at Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Our theme music, Generation Next, is written and performed exclusively for Varsity Letters by Chad Joiner and the MEI Screaming Eagles marching band.

Mr. Basketball for sure ! I have known Larry since our 1972 senior high school year when we were pitted against each other in the Lowermainland Tournament . We started out as enemies on the floor but became great friends on and off the floor. After high school, we played together, coached together, worked together, ran tournaments and camps together as well as did lots of fun social activities together. There is nobody more passionate about basketball than Larry. He has done so much in so many ways for this great game and deserves this shout out from Howard. In fact, even though this was a great interview, it only scratched the surface of what Larry has contributed. You will need to buy his book.
Congratulations Larry and stay young my friend !
Right on Ross. Very well said.
Great podcast. Very enjoyable to listen to. Larry Street is an icon in BC Basketball. Larry has been a long time friend. Never a bad word to say about anyone and always with a smile on his face. I have known Larry since around 1982. He coached against our teams when I was playing High School ball at Eric Hamber. Larry was a men’s League team mate with the Royal Towers way back as well. Great memories of a great man. We still talk to this day. I always remember Larry for his summer leagues, Men’s leagues, Super Socco tourney with my High School coach Randy Clark, Alumni tournament and many more basketball related events. Larry was one of the first people to encourage me to get into coaching and helped me to get a job doing clinics at the Cameron Rec. Centre, while I was finishing off my degree. Just wanted to post this to show my gratitude to one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Thanks Larry for all you do.
