B.C. Junior Boys Hoops! Opening round updates from Day 1 of the 55th annual championships at the LEC!

LANGLEY — We now have complete details from the opening round of the B.C. junior boys basketball championships currently in progress at the Langley Events Centre.

Before we get to today’s 16 opening-round contests, here’s tonight’s quarterfinals (note first games start at 4 p.m. as per Group 2)

TOP HALF DRAW

GROUP 1

5:30 p.m. — No. 1 Argyle vs. No. 16 Sir Winston Churchill (SC)

5:30 p.m. — No. 5 Burnaby South vs. No. 24 RE Mountain (CC)

GROUP 2

4 p.m. — No. 4 Lord Tweedsmuir vs. No. 20 Brookswood (SC)

4 p.m. — No. 5 Vancouver College vs. No. 21 Salish (CC)

BOTTOM HALF DRAW

GROUP 3

7 p.m. — No. 2 St. Pat’s vs. No. 15 Walnut Grove (SC)

7  p.m. — No. 7 New Westminster vs. No. 10 Kelowna (CC)

No. 1 Argyle 82 No. 32 Similkameen 29

The top-seeded Pipers from North Vancouver held the Sparks to 13 points in the second half. Ilia Maydan led four double-figure scorers qith 19 points including 11 in the fourth quarter. Etan Mercer scored 12.

No. 16 Sir Winston Churchill 80 No. 17 Charles Hays 67

Amara Madahar went off for 39 poitns while teammate Matthew Mclellan added 25 more for the Bulldogs. Hudson Veldman with 15 points and Kohen Logan with 14 led Prince Rupert’s Rainmakers.

QUAD B

No. 8 Burnaby South 8 No. 56 Brentwood College 26

Miguel Samson’s 17 points led the winning Rebels to a comfortable win over Brentwood College. B.C.’s only nicknameless squad got eight points from Claus Russel.

No. 24 RE Mountain 52 No. 9 Sa-Hali 35

Langley’s own R.E, Mountain Eagles pulled off the big upset as Noah Rosales scored 16 points and Xiu Ming He 15 more. Justin Vetter led Kamloops’ Sabres with 14 points.

QUAD C

No. 4 Lord Tweedsmuir 70 No. 29 Sir Charles Tupper 44

Gurtaj Hayer scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the third quarter as the South Fraser champion Panthers topped Vancouver’s Tigers. Chamond Egodawatta had 16 more for the winners. Hiroki Thompson and Jacob Casem had 15 and 13 points respectively in the loss for the Tigers.

No. 20 Brookswood 50 No. 13 Oak Bay 32

Led by the dual 17-point outings of Carter Helibron and Tyson Kenyon, Langley’s Bobcays topped Victoria’s Bays. Bryson Tait led Oak Bay with 11 points.

QUAD D

No. 5 Vancouver College 63 No. 28 Abbotsford Traditional 44

Etan Chiu scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second for the Fighting Irish. Abby Traditional’s Titans, who trailed 30-29 at the half. Got 14 points from Tanveer Samta, and 12 each from Aaron Dhillon and Gurshan Cheema.

No. 21 Salish 52 No. 12 Rutland 49

Salish of Surrey got 12 points each from Wyatt Schweizer and Isaiah Samson in a nail-biting 52-29 win over Rutland of West Kelowna. Sanjay Dadrah with 18 points and Money Dadrah with 12 led Rutland.

QUAD A

No. 2 St. Patrick 81 No. 31 Duchess Park 23

Dhyne Cotin with 13 points, and Dion Gonzales and Keanne Tabag with a dozen each led the Celtics pass Prince George’s Condors. DPSS got 10 points Callus Whitehouse.

No 15 Walnut Grove 57 No. 18 Pacific Academy 37

Nicolas Ribeiro Terso poured home 20 points to lead Langley’s Gators past Surrey’s Breakers. Pacific Academy got 12 points from Micah Green.

QUAD B

No. 7 New Westminster 82 No. 26 Shas Ti Kelly Road 32

Gabriel Alucema Djordje Komar each scored 17 points, while Jesmin Krashnica added 12 as the Hyacks saw their seed carry the way in a win over Prince George’s Grizzlies. Gabe Tabora led Shas Ti with seven points.

No. 10 Kelowna 73 No. 23 Langley Fundamental 48

Humraj Chahal scored a game-high 27 points while Miles McParland and Hunrter Bush scored 11 each to the lead the Owls past the Titans. Langley Fundmaental got 15 points from Solomon Tran and 13 from Caleb Raddatz  

QUAD C

No. 3 Terry Fox 69 vs. No. 30 South Delta 39

Nathan Towers led a trio of Ravens with 12 points as the Fraser North champs topped a South Delta team making the school’s first-ever junior or senior boys B.C. championship appearance, the longest draught of its kind in the province. Hussein Baardarani and Robi Felipe added 10 each for the winners. Jaxon Kusel led the Sun Devils with 10 points. 

No. 14 Fleetwood Park vs. No. 19 Claremont

Rivan Jiyasinghe scored a game-high 25 points , including the game-winning free throw, while Jheid Camarillo added 17 more as Surrey’s Fleetwood Park Dragons edged Victoria’s Claremont Spartans. Lawal Amor scored 18 for the Spartans while Jonah Slovak added 11 more.

QUAD D

No. 27 Lambrick Park 47 No. 6 Holy Cross 45

Victoria’s underdog Lions opened a 16-4 lead on the favoured Crusaders of Surrey, then hunkered down in a game of survival, pulling off a 47-45 win behind 14 points from London Bruck and 12 more from David Ngoyi. Davin Dalupang led the Crusaders with 14 points, Sam Shchepotkin added 10.

No. 22 Sullivan Heights 63 No. 11 Sardis 57

Kids, practice your free throws.

Brendon Temblett scored a game-high 29 points, including 10-for-10 free throw shootings as the underdog Stars, who had to beat North Van’s Carson Graham Eagles in a sudden-play in just to qualify for the provincial field, upset the No. 11 Sardis Falcons of Chilliwack. Not to be outdone, Sards’ Landon Pomeranzwent 14-of-16 to lead the Falcons with 25 points.
