LANGLEY — In years past, it was the big tradition on Saturday mornings at the top-tiered B.C. senior boys high school basketball championships.
This season, the tradition continues for younger players and their is no cost or entry fee to register.
We’re talking about the B.C. High School Grade 9 Boys Provincial 3-on-3 championships.
It’s open to any Grade 9 or Grade 8 player from any team that did not qualify for the B.C. Grade 9 Provincials.
As an example, if you just played in the B.C. Junior Boys Provincials and you’re not in Grade 10, you are eligible.
You must all be from the same school and you may have up to two Grade 8’s per team.
There is a $500 scholarship to the winning team and the top four teams receive provincial trophies and championship t-shirts.
Round-robin and elimination games start at 9 a.m., Saturday March 5 at Semiahmoo and Earl Marriott gyms in Surrey and go all day.
The top four teams from each gym advance to the Final Eight. Round robin play continues to a Final Four.
The Final Four return the next day, Sunday March 6 at 12 noon to play for gold in the main gym just prior to the last two games of the provincials finals.
Entry is online on at the Semiahmoo gym at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 5.
