LANGLEY — Reader response was excellent last week as Varsity Letters and B.C. Basketball Metrics debuted with its co-operative presentation of Top 16 and Zone ratings for B.C. senior boys basketball. We’re back with Week 2 and as the post-season beckons, it’s pretty apparent that nothing beats a good regional clash, whatever zone you happen to be talking about.
The Quad-A all-Kelowna rivalry was witness to an upset win this past Tuesday as the Rutland Thunder topped the Kelowna Owls 81-79 in league play. The ripple effect saw the Thunder move up five sports to No. 6 in the BCBBM’s Combined Team Rating, hot on the heels of a two-spot climb the week prior. Kelowna sits at No. 5.
Brentwood College of Mill Bay navigated similar territory at Triple-A, moving up five spots to No. 6 after a glorious run of success saw it win its own invitational event over the weekend. Brentwood College beat Edward Milne in the semifinals and then Lambrick Park in the finals, continuing to do more than suggest how competitive the 3A Vancouver Island championships are going to be.
Last week’s biggest tumblers, D.P. Todd of Prince George, fell 10 spots to No. 14 at Double-A. This week, they’re the tier’s biggest climbers, moving up four spots to No. 10, its combined team rating of 42 placing it from an analytic-strength standpoint, as the North Central’s projected lone provincial qualifier.
St. John’s of Vancouver has been ranked No. 1 at Single A since the preseason poll, and this week it’s CTR is more than double the next-highest rated team.
