09.19.18 edition: Varsity Letter’s Top 5 B.C. high school football games to watch this weekend (surprise, surprise)

Here’s our take on the top five games to take in this weekend over Week 3 of the B.C. High School Football campaign.

1 ARGYLE at WINDSOR (Friday, 3:30 p.m.)

The skinny — Never mind that neither comes in with a provincial ranking, or that each team has played just once this season. AA’s version of AAA’s Buchanan Bowl shape us this season as an identity-defining game for both teams, especially the defending B.C. champion Dukes, who have some very nice pieces back but are also coping with the loss of some of program’s most talented players ever. Each is coming off a win last week. Expect emotion.

2 AAA No. 3 MT. DOUGLAS at NOTRE DAME (Friday, 2 p.m., Burnaby Lakes)

The skinny — The young Jugglers’ defence needs to put together two consistent halves to stick with the Rams and senior QB Gideone Kremler. Notre Dame lost 35-0 two weeks ago to St. Thomas More, then led 26-6 last Saturday at Seaquam, hanging on to win 26-21. The tier’s leading tackler, Notre Dame senior Cameron Mah, needs to inspire the rest of his unit.

3 G.W. GRAHAM at No. 2 AA BALLENAS (3 p.m., Saturday)

The skinny — The visiting Grizzlies were blitzed in the second half of it’s 22-6 loss to then-unranked Holy Cross. It bumped them from preseason No. 4 to honourable mention status. Last week’s 42-12 win over PG’s Polars was a step back. But now they face a tough and skilled schooner full of Whalers Saturday in Parksville. It’s a non-conference test that will be the toughest of their regular season.

4 No. 3 AAA NEW WESTMINSTER at HANDSWORTH (Friday, 4 p.m.)

The skinny — Hyacks hit the road as favourites, but the defending champions know they are facing perhaps the most dynamic single force in the province in Royals’ senior all-everything Keelan White. New West looking to go 2-0 in the West ahead of a real toughie next week in Tsawwassen against South Delta. The Royals? They don’t dare look ahead a week, although that will be tough with Buchanan Bowl foe Carson Graham doubling as a conference clash.

5 No. 4 HOLY CROSS at EARL MARRIOTT (Saturday, 12 noon)

The skinny — The Crusaders, small in numbers, showed a ton of moxy in knocking off G.W. Graham two weekends ago. Will they show rust in a return to live action? The Mariners, meanwhile, are coming off their first AAA conference win in program history. It’s AA vs. AAA, but also one of those games where you have no idea what to expect.

Here’s our take on the top five games to take in this weekend over Week 3 of the B.C. High School Football campaign.
